International Sherry Week 2-8 November 2015
International Sherry Week is an international fiesta celebrating this unique southern Spanish wine - thousands of restaurants, wine bars, hotels and merchants across the world will hold events such as special pairing menus, as well as tastings and other Sherry-themed events, spreading the word about how perfectly this wine matches such a wide variety of dishes, from cheese and olives, to meat, fish, seafood, game, and desserts.
Previous worldwide events organised by sherry aficionados over the past two years have proved hugely successful, with more than 2000 events in 22 countries, and an estimated 100,000 people taking part. Social media has played a key role in communicating the message to participating bars, restaurants and wine retailers around the world, from the UK to Singapore to the America´s, with a total Twitter reach of more than two million. This astounding success confirms Sherry’s resurgence in popularity thanks to an improved understanding of how to drink it.
This year’s event will be held under the auspices of the official governing body of Sherry wines, the Consejo Regulador Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
We are very proud that this type of event was initiated by Certified Sherry Educators, dedicated enthusiasts who had achieved our own qualification and whose passion and hard work resulted in a global event which attracted such enormous interest and which so effectively communicated the unique qualities of Sherry. This year we hope that Sherry Week will introduce the delights of this Spanish wine to even more wine-lovers,” said César Saldaña, General Manager of the Regulatory Council.
Ambassadors for previous events have included world-renowned chefs and restaurateurs such as Frank Camorra (Movida, Australia), Jose Pizarro (Jose and Pizarro, London), Angel Leon (Aponiente, El Puerto de Santa Maria) and Talia Baiocchi (Author, Sherry The World´s Best Kept Secret and Editor Punch Magazine NYC). The gastronomic luminaries lending their support this year will be announced in late September.
A resurgence of interest in this unique wine, which had been widely misunderstood, but which has quickly gained a new generation of followers, has seen an increase in other pairing events.
International Sherry Week is one of a series of wine-related events which Jerez will be celebrating in 2015. On 9 June the finals of Copa Jerez, which pairs the finest sommeliers and chefs from eight countries to produce winning food-and-Sherry combinations, was held in the city – one of the highlights of the gastronomic year.
European Wine Tourism Day (8 November) will bring visitors to the Sherry Triangle over several days where many bodegas will have open doors days, allowing wine-lovers from all over to see the cathedrals where these wines are blended using the age-old solera system.
