Sherry goes from strength to strength

The annual Great Sherry Tasting returned this week with a packed-out event at OXO2 in central London.

Now in its seventh consecutive year, the trade and press tasting boasts nearly 200 sherries on display, this year representing 33 producers from 24 of the UK's best Sherry importers. Guest included around 300 trade professionals from a wide variety of businesses including sommeliers, chefs, merchants, restaurateurs, buyers and a selection of the UK's leading wine writers.

In addition to the main tasting the Sherry Wines UK team organised three masterclasses, all of which were over subscribed. Hosted by Beltran Domecq, president Consejo Regulador Jerez y Manzanilla, the programme included: Sherry Uncovered, an overview of Sherry production for those wanting to refresh their knowledge, and; The Sherry Landscape, which provided an advanced session focussing on the landscape, pagos and vineyards around the sherry triangle. A third session on Sherry and food pairing was hosted by Fiona Beckett, one of the UK's most prominent food and wine writers, who introduced her forthcoming eBook: 101 Great Ways to Enjoy Sherry.

Speaking at the event, president Beltran Domecq commented on how exciting the UK market was for Sherry right now, with many producers sharing his optimism. Whilst the UK remains a competitive market, it seems Sherry still retains a unique position that UK importers are capitalising on.

In the days after the event producers hosted a series of events for trade and consumers alike, including winemaker led tastings at London Sherry hotspot Drakes Tabanco and cutting edge Brixton Pop.
