UK Premiere of “Sherry and the Mystery of Palo Cortado"
Hosted by Beltrán Domecq, President of the Consejo Regulador de Jerez and Manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda—Sherry's governing council—the audience was treated to an informal wine-tasting in the auditorium, straight after the film's UK premiere.
The film had its international premiere in February this year at the Berlin Film Festival and was conceived as a tribute to Sherry, its history, production and particularly to those people responsible for cultivating its history and its future. As the title suggests, it is also an investigative journey towards discovering the hidden secrets of Sherry's most elusive style, Palo Cortado.
Also in attendance was its producer, Antonio Saura, who said:
"Since the film was first screened at the Berlin Film Festival, it has been wonderful to see the reaction we have had from within the Sherry industry but also with our audiences around the world who, through the film, are learning, enjoying and seeing for themselves how this special wine evolves. We are delighted to be able to bring the film to the UK."
During an audience Q&A session after the film, director José Luis López-Linares, when asked what had brought him to the subject of Sherry, replied: "It was my love for wine, I had no idea of Sherry before we made this film. I have learnt everything about Sherry from making this film and for that I am grateful, and now drink it constantly!"
Beltrán Domecq, who led the tasting and also took part in the Q&A session, concluded the evening by commenting: "Even after this wonderful and detailed exploration to discover the secrets behind Palo Cortado, I am afraid it still remains a mystery, and something that people will need to discover for themselves. With a glass of Sherry of course! And I think that is how we all like it."
It is the first time the EIFF has organised a 'Doc of the Day' schedule, in honour of the festival's origins as a documentary film festival, and the screening of “Sherry: The Mystery of Palo Cortado” was also the first time a wine tasting had been organised for festival goers.
