Sherry Night

Jancis Robinson OBE MW hosts sell-out first-ever Sherry Night, to “celebrate the gloriously diverse wines of Jerez”.

24 April 2017, London, UK - One of the world’s leading wine writer’s, Jancis Robinson OBE MW, hosted an event on Sunday 23 April, 2017, dedicated to Sherry, to “shine a light on truly fine wines we think deserve more attention.” Saying: “No candidate is worthier than sherry.”

The wines chosen for the event were selected from the highest scoring Sherry’s tasted and featured on www.jancisrobinson.com over the past 12 months, including some notable extras and 2017 en rama wines. A total of 38 Sherries made it onto the final wine list* – an achievement that is testament to the high quality of Sherry being produced in the region.

Robinson continued: “Our tasting brings together 38 wines, from bone-dry Manzanillas and Finos to sweet PXs, via the complexities of Palo Cortado, Amontillado and Oloroso, plus a lone Moscatel. It includes wines tasted over recent months by the team plus the eight ‘en rama’ wines Julia selected in Jerez earlier this month, some only just bottled.”

The final selection of en rama Sherry’s were chosen by Julia Harding MW following a trip to Jerez in March (2017), organised by Sherry Wines UK director Angeline Bayly. During Harding’s visit, DO Jerez y Manzanilla president, Beltrán Domecq organised and hosted a tasting of 2017 en rama wines, from which Harding chose the final wines for the Sherry Night in London.

Those attending the event were from all corners of the globe, including some travelling from Ireland, Italy, many parts of London and southern England but most impressively, Australia. Robinson noted about the guests: “Tasters ranged vastly in age but it was great to hear comments such as 'I haven't tasted sherry for 20 years and this has really opened my eyes to the range available'.”

Speaking after the event, Angeline Bayly, UK Director for Sherry Wines, said: “Tonight has been a wonderful celebration of Sherry, with a fantastic collection of wines.”

She continued: “I think, to have the most influential wine-writing team from jancisrobsinson.com spearheading this event speaks volumes for the opportunities that lay ahead for Sherry in the UK.”

Sherry Wines UK would like to express thanks to the team at jr.com for organising and promoting Sherry Night. In particular Richard Hemming MW, who was instrumental in organising the event, working behind the scenes.
