SHERRY Maligned, Misunderstood, Magnificent!

“With over 3,000 years of history behind it, the future of sherry lies in its past. Sommeliers admire it for its unique array of styles and its unparalleled versatility with food; Ben Howkins’ book will tell you why” – Steven Spurrier

Sherry – Maligned, Misunderstood, Magnificent! is the first in a new series on winemaking styles that casts an expert and entertainingly readable eye over an old favourite that’s been in a spot of trouble but has now found its way back to our dining tables...
Lifting the lid on one of wine’s best-kept secrets, Ben Howkins’ book explains how this much-maligned treat is making a magnificent comeback.

Readers will learn:

• How an accident of nature results in one of the world’s most distinct wines.

• How a once-booming business has bounced back from a succession of scandals that left its vineyards and historic bodegas devastated.

• Why sherry is now better than ever thanks to its upgraded vineyard classification and a range of exciting new styles.

• Why, in terms of the time, expertise and care that goes into making it, sherry is unquestionably the best-value quality wine that money can buy.

About Ben Howkins

Ben Howkins has made wine his life. With Hugh Johnson, he is co-founder of the Royal Tokaj Wine Company in Hungary, and can be credited with re-introducing this amazing dessert wine back to the UK for the first time since the Second World War. Ben has spent much of his career marketing and exporting port and sherry. He is passionate about port and has written two widely acclaimed books on the subject: Rich, Rare and Red (now in its fourth edition) and  Real Men Drink Port… and Ladies do too! Ben is an International Wine Competition judge, and is a past trustee of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and of the Royal Household Wine Committee.  Ben is also mad about sherry. He is in the unique position of being able to count the movers and shakers – and the many dignitaries – of Jerez as his good friends. Talking to them all has given him unrivalled insight into the sherry scene, with perspectives on its glamorous past, and (in his chapter ’50 Shades of Sherry’) its intriguing future. Ben has been lucky enough to spend time in bodegas (and tasting rooms!) that few others would have access to, and he brings his findings to this specially commissioned guide – his first book on the subject of sherry.
