Dry January or Tryanuary?

After the excesses of the holiday period, the food and drink sector has traditionally found itself in a quieter phase across the month of January. With healthy eating and new year's resolutions kicking in, there is an obvious knock on effect on the sector. You may therefore have heard of Dry January, but have you heard of Tryanuary?

Thankfully, there is now an alternative to the reductive message of Dry January, it's called Tryanuary and it fits perfectly with the new year desire for change and new possibility, as Tim Worth points out in the Derby Telegraph. He suggests you take it upon yourself to try wine from a couple of beyond the norm wine regions, starting with J for Jerez, (One for each letter of January).  Alistair Gibson writing for the Portsmouth News also states his new year's resolution is to fly the flag for Sherry, recommending 3 sherries to convert newcomers.

Tryanuary started as a campaign to persuade consumers to seek out new independent breweries, bars and bottle shops and and share their discoveries with people throughout January. It isn't about drinking more, it's about tasting something new and experiencing something interesting. This trend is now stretching to wider food and drink sectors, encouraging people to try something different, particularly from independent businesses.  Searching for the hashtag #Tryanuary across social media platforms reveals many businesses offering tips, temptations and promotions to make the most of the month.

Bruce Evans writing in the Mid Devon Gazette poses another solution to assist with Dry January - There's always dry wine, cider or sherry! Whilst wine distributors Boutinot are running a social media campaign encouraging people to try new wines and new grape varieties as their New Year's resolutions.

Even if you are sticking to the healthy eating plan, there is no reason not to include a sherry. With very low residual sugars, Manzanilla and Fino are a healthier option to consider.

Lastly, if you're stuck for inspiration then Matthew Jukes writing for the Daily Mail recommends pairing an Oloroso with a healthy Pea and Ham soup, for a wholesome winter warmer experience! We couldn't agree more with his sentiment - New Year signals a new start for your palate – cast aside prejudices this year and open your wine mind!
