3rd Annual International Sherry Week 7-13 November 2016

For a third year International Sherry Week, organised under the auspices of El Consejo Regulador Jerez-Xeres-Sherry, will spread the word about Sherry wines to aficionados in many countries.

Sherry Week, which takes place on 7-13 November 2016, is an international fiesta celebrating this unique southern Spanish wine. Thousands of restaurants, bars, wine stores and bodegas across the world will hold Sherry tastings and offer pairing menus, as well as other Sherry-themed events, to show how superbly this wine pairs with a wide variety of dishes, from cheese and cured meats, to fish, seafood, stews, and desserts.

Sherry Week is a great opportunity to share with consumers the vast knowledge from all our varied activities - Sherry Cocktail Competitions, seminars, masterclasses, and our Sherry Educator Programme, says César Saldaña, General Manager Sherry Wine Council, Jerez-Xeres-Sherry. Professionals in the wine and gastronomy sectors can spread the word about Sherry to enthusiasts, whether newcomers or experienced. So we’re not only connecting Sherry lovers from around the world, but also supporting all our collaborators.

An exciting Sherry news event to look out for: an attempt will be made in Mexico during Sherry Week to break the World Record for most people tasting wine at the same time (current record: 5,095). More Twitter tastings will be held, featuring exclusive wines from bodegas which are not available for sale to the public, alongside wines which you can buy.

Last year, the second International Sherry Week, held on 2 - 9 November 2015, saw more than 2000 events taking place in 25 countries around the world. A notable new participating country was China, with nearly 200 events, while the UK and US both doubled the number of events organised.

The Sherry Week events map, a focal point of the event’s microsite (sherryweek.wine), has been designed by two local artists from Jerez, after American and Australian artwork was used for the first and second Sherry Weeks.  The Sherry world map is an artistic rendering of Sherry's history as seen through the eyes of the young Spanish design duo, known in the industry for their strikingly original approach and featuring a variety of iconic scenes, symbols and sherry lovers from today and yesteryear.

Sherry Week’s success as a social media marketing event has been recognised in two awards organised by industry publications: Drinks International Wine Marketing Awards and the Drinks Business.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Sherry is a wine which can only be produced in the “Sherry Triangle” – the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the province of Cadiz, south-western Spain
The Consejo Regulador’s role is to protect the Denomination of Origin (DO) Jerez-Xeres-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlucar de Barrameda, ensuring that no wine from any other geographical area is sold as Sherry wine
DO Jerez-Xerex-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda is the oldest DO in Spain, and has 2,800 wine-growers. Wine has been produced in the area since Roman times, and Sherry has been exported to the UK since the 16th century
